HEAD coach Jonathan Woodgate believes David Brooks is “only going to get better” as he recorded a goal and an assist against Coventry on Saturday.
Talented playmaker Brooks provided a superb cross for Arnaut Danjuma’s opener after just 23 seconds during the Dorset club’s 4-1 victory over the Sky Blues.
Brooks then got in on the scoring act himself at Vitality Stadium, tapping a cross from Danjuma after 69 minutes.
And Woodgate believes there will be more to come from the Wales international.
He told the Daily Echo: “That’s Brooksy at probably 70 per cent. That’s the longest he’s played in six weeks.
“A goal and an assist. He is obviously going to make bad passes at times but the more the game went on, he was getting in the game and I thought he played well.
“You can see he is only going to get fitter, he’s only going to get better, only going to get more confident, so it’s good for the football team.”
Brooks had missed eight Championship fixtures through injury and illness before coming back into Cherries’ side against Blackburn on Easter Monday.
The Warrington-born star was brutally honest in the build-up to the clash with the Sky Blues, telling the club website: “I’m probably my biggest critic, I just haven’t been good enough this season. With everything that’s gone on, I’m the first one who’s trying to rectify that.”
Asked about those comments from the 23-year-old, Woodgate replied: “I think he’s been a bit too honest there. I don’t necessarily agree with that.
“Last season he was out injured for the majority of the season, right? This season has been stop-start, he’s been out for six weeks.
“It’s difficult for him at times but we know the type of calibre of the player we’ve got in the dressing room.
“With Junior (Stanislas), with Arnie (Danjuma), with (Rodrigo) Riquelme, with (Philip) Billing, we’ve got attacking players who can produce chances for themselves and chances for the team.”
