JONATHAN Woodgate is sure brother-in-law Stewart Downing will produce "an outstanding display" if called upon for Blackburn Rovers tomorrow.

Cherries head to Ewood Park on Easter Monday (3pm), seeking a third consecutive Championship victory having defeated fellow promotion hopefuls Swansea City and Middlesbrough at Vitality Stadium.

Blackburn had threatened to challenge at the top end of the table themselves earlier in the campaign, before an alarming dip in form has seen them tumble down to 15th following their Good Friday loss at Wycombe Wanderers.

And there looks set to be a familiar face to Woodgate in the Rovers squad.

Woodgate is married to Natalie, the sister of his former Boro team-mate Downing, and the pair have two children.

A former England international of 35 caps, 36-year-old Stewart Downing is no longer a regular starter in the Championship. But Woodgate knows the threat his brother-in-law could pose to Cherries.

"Stewy hasn't played much this season," Woodgate told the Daily Echo.

"He’s coming towards the end of his career, but what a career he’s had. I’m sure if he’s called upon, he’ll give an outstanding display.

"He’s a good player, Stew. He’s got this horrible habit of passing to his own team-mates, which he does.

"I remember Harry Redknapp rang me up, this must’ve been when I wasn’t at Bournemouth. He went ‘alright Jon, I’m watching this game, Stewy Downing has come on and he hasn’t given the ball away once. He’s got a terrible habit of passing to his own team-mates’. That’s what he said.

"That’s Stewy. That’s what he’s like.

"He was a flying left-winger at Middlesbrough, one of the best wingers we’ve had, doesn’t get the respect at Middlesbrough that he should in my view from a lot of fans.

"To be honest, it’s the local lads who get all the flak.

"Now he’s changed his position to a centre-midfielder and he can play for as long as he wants to, Stew."

Asked if eight-year-old son Carter, who is a big football fan himself, is more of a Woodgate or a Downing, the Cherries boss said: "He’s a Woodgate.

"Have a look at him, he’s the double of me!"
