CHERRIES star Arnaut Danjuma has received Islamophobic abuse on social media, after an interview in which he expressed his frustration at people calling taking a knee a waste of time.

The Dutchman was sent a vile message via his official Instagram account earlier today.

Danjuma has recently opened up about his personal decision to carry on taking the knee in games.

When asked about how he felt when people described the act as a waste of time, the 24-year-old told Sky Sports: "To be honest with you, I don't think I can say it on camera.

“It really frustrates me when people say that.

“I definitely feel it's not a waste of time, and anyone who says it needs to look in the mirror.

"It is a very important subject to speak about, and reach out to others about. Anyone who says that should educate themselves more as well.

"So it's important to keep taking a knee, it still has an impact and it's important to remind others."

After that interview, Danjuma revealed he had received abuse from an Instagram account which has since been deleted.

Along with a screenshot of the message he received, which included reference to his Muslim faith, Danjuma tweeted: “I said what I said.”

Cherries have shared their support of the player, with a statement on Twitter reading: “The person in question has already deleted their account. This has to stop.

“Thank you for speaking up and we stand with you, @ArnautDanjuma”
