MANAGER Jason Tindall admitted “you could sense the lack of confidence and belief” in his squad after Cherries’ 2-1 loss to Sheffield Wednesday.

Defeat to the struggling Owls left the Dorset club pondering their fourth consecutive reverse in the Championship.

Chris Mepham’s poor back-pass was seized upon by Callum Paterson and the Owls’ top scorer gleefully poked the ball underneath a despairing Asmir Begovic to put the visitors ahead.

Junior Stanislas equalised for Cherries from the penalty spot after substitute Sam Surridge was hauled down by a clumsy tackle from Sam Hutchinson.

The Owls were lucky not to end the game with 10 men after Chey Dunkley escaped with only a yellow card, after hauling down Surridge when he was clean through on goal.

And Cherries’ miserable night was compounded when Jordan Rhodes popped up to head the winner for Wednesday from a Kadeem Harris cross.

“We are going through a real difficult moment,” said Cherries boss Tindall

“I think you could sense the lack of confidence and belief – certainly in the first half from the guys. Making mistakes that, early part of the season, wasn’t there.

“It’s a young group of players and when you concede the goal we did – certainly the first goal – you can’t account for that, you can’t plan for that.

“I think that almost just summed up where we were in the first half with that type of mistake that led to their first goal.

“It certainly put us under pressure coming out for the second half.

“Once we equalised, you could see we were the team that was pushing and the team that looked like they were going to score if there was going to be another goal in the game.

“We got done with the sucker-punch goal right at the end.

“Unfortunately, a little bit of a lack of organisation that led up to the second goal – we missed a couple of duels in the middle of the pitch – didn’t stop the cross coming in and it was a great header at the back post from Rhodes.

“It was obviously a big blow for us.”

The setback left Cherries sixth in the table, just two points ahead of seventh-placed Middlesbrough.
