BOURNEMOUTH puncher Chris Billam-Smith admitted the European title is “on the list of things I want to win” after a sublime display at Matchroom’s Fight Camp.

The 30-year-old made quick work of previously unbeaten Nathan Thorley in Essex to successfully defend his commonwealth cruiserweight title.

He floored the Cardiff puncher three times before stopping him in the second round to seal victory.

The success took The Gentleman’s professional record to 11 victories and one defeat, 10 of those wins have come inside the scheduled distance.

Billam-Smith could now take on Tommy McCarthy for the vacant European belt. A possible rematch against Richard Riakporhe is also an option.

Asked about moving up to European level, Billam-Smith told the Daily Echo: “It’s another prestigious belt.

“Obviously when you start your career, you want to win the commonwealth, British, European, world titles and all those sorts of things.

“It’s on the list of things I want to win. It would be great to fight for that.

“It’s always the way. You achieve one goal and you want to do something else.

“Hopefully it could be a European title shot against Tommy McCarthy, who is a good fighter, or the Riakporhe rematch.”

Assessing his latest victory, the former Poole ABC man said: “I was happy with the finish at the time.

“I wasn’t actually happy with the performance to begin with straight after the fight but when I watched it back, I was much more pleased with it.

“I thought I made more mistakes than I did in there but I really only made one or two just before the finish.”

He added: “I was really lucky to get the opportunity to fight on a show like that when so many fighters aren’t getting opportunities.

“The whole setup was wicked. I really enjoyed the ring walk because it was something different. It was cool to come down the steps into the garden and the arena they had set up.

“It was good to get out there and put on a performance like that because I know I have done a lot of good work and improvement this year. I am really pleased I got to show that.

“Twelve months ago, I’d just boxed Riakporhe and I am probably four or five times the fighter I was from then.

“I have got a lot of improving to do still but I feel like I am really coming into my own now.”

Billam-Smith, who is set to marry fiancée Mia later this month, was also grateful for the support he received while competing in promoter Eddie Hearn’s garden.

Due to COVID-19, fans were not allowed inside the venue.

“It’s crazy the amount of messages and new fans you get,” he said.

“You get messages from your opponents’ supporters saying ‘great fight, you’ve won a fan in me’ and stuff like that.

“We’ve actually had a message from someone in New Zealand, who is going to send over some pictures for me to sign and I am going to send them a t-shirt back as well.

“It’s crazy to think people who are that far away from me are watching and know who I am.”
