FERNDOWN Otters' Nick Vaughan provided two of Dorset's seven wins in the South West round of the ASA National Inter-Counties Masters competition at Salisbury.

The 43-year-old Royal Marines chef won the 35 and over 50m freestyle in 25.79 and the 50m butterfly in 27.71.

Bournemouth Dolphins' 22-year-old Alex Savage, making her debut in a masters event, was also involved in two wins, taking the 18 and over 50m breaststroke in 35.37 and joining Laura Bale (back 32.79), Charlie Goodes-Wilson (fly 33.72) and Rachael Potter (free 31.07) in the women's 100-plus medley relay.

Other winners were 55 and over swimmers Nigel Foster (50m backstroke 36.29) and Judy McRae (50m breaststroke 45.64) and Helen Dickens in the 45-plus 50m butterfly (36.96).

Devon dominated and Dorset - weakened by the withdrawal of seven swimmers to illness and injury - could not quite match last year's South West second place.

But 21 seconds and 13 thirds helped them to secure third place behind a stronger-than-usual team from host county Wiltshire.

The times from all 68 events at regional events around England now go into a computer to work out a national result.

South West result: 1 Devon 342, 2 Wiltshire 279, 3 Dorset 258, 4 Gloucestershire 226, 5 Cornwall 184, 6 Somerset 129.
