CHERRIES star Lewis Cook admitted his inaugural England appearance was “something I look back on” and added: “Hopefully one day I can be back in there.”

The talented midfielder, capped by his country from under-16 level all the way up to the senior squad, made history by becoming the first serving Cherries player to represent the Three Lions two years ago.

The midfielder came on as a 71st-minute substitute in a 1-1 friendly draw with Italy back in March 2018, replacing Jesse Lingard at Wembley.

He was later placed on England’s standby list for the World Cup that summer – where Gareth Southgate’s squad reached the semi-finals in Russia.

Looking back at his first Three Lions appearance, in which his grandfather reportedly won £17,000 from a bet as a result of the outing, York-born ace Cook told the Daily Echo: “It was an amazing time.

“It’s something I look back on and my family were very proud and things like that.

“It was all kind of a blur – it happened really quickly.

“It gave me a taste and hopefully, one day, I can be back in there.”

That appearance against the Azzurri remains the 23-year-old’s only senior England cap to this date, having been hit by a serious knee injury while playing for Cherries against Huddersfield in December 2018.

But now fully recovered with 22 Cherries appearances under his belt this season, the former Leeds United youngster knows his club form will dictate his international future.

“I have always said when people have asked me stuff about it – I think you need to need to focus on the club,” he added.

“If you are playing well at your club with and you’re in form – that will do everything.

“If we get back playing this season, I think I have got to focus on Bournemouth and making sure we can stay up. Then we will go from there.”

Like the rest of the nation amid the coronavirus pandemic, Cook has been working from home over the past weeks.

The driven midfielder has been doing his best to keep up his fitness for when football can resume.

He said: “It’s a case of trying new things and making sure I get my gym and my running in most days – a little bit of yoga sometimes, we get sent some plans and things like that.

“Sometimes I’ll do that (yoga) – I won’t do it every day but I will give it a go.

“It’s hard to replicate training and games. We can do the best we can with different exercise but it’s tough.

“I just have to make sure that me and the team, we make sure we are ticking over and keeping our strength up, so that we are ready."
