SCOTT Mitchell described as “awesome” and “special” the feeling of winning his first event in the PDC, adding: “I didn’t expect it to be that quick.”

The Bransgore thrower, a 2015 BDO world champion, competed on the PDC Challenge Tour at the weekend in Wigan and claimed victory in just the second event of the new year.

Mitchell, who failed to seal a spot on the main Pro Tour via Q School earlier this month, a week after suffering the disappointment of defeat in the semi-finals at the BDO World Championship, made light work of the field in the second-tier tournament.

The 49-year-old won nine games to take the title, including a 102.3 average in victory over event one winner Robert Collins, before dismantling former Tour Card holder Andrew Gilding 5-1 in the final to claim the £2,000 top prize.

Mitchell told the Echo: “I came in after the worlds on that Monday morning with my chin dragging the floor and then I get it lifted up to go to Q School and I come back in again and my chin’s dragging the floor again.

“This was the first Monday for a while I’ve come in and I haven’t got a gravel rash on my chin! It’s a good feeling.

“Obviously I had the disappointment of coming home and not having a card and I was determined that that wasn’t going to set me back, it was going to make me and operate me and I then set myself a little goal of wanting to win one of the Challenge Tour events over the next year.

“So to do that in the second tour event is pretty awesome to be honest. I didn’t expect it to be that quick.

“I’d have been a bit of a hypocrite if I thought I could do it that quickly.”

Mitchell’s victory has helped him to top spot in the Challenge Tour order of merit, which puts him in prime position to fill any vacated spots on the lucrative main tour next month, alongside the likes of Michael van Gerwen and Peter Wright.

“It just happened how it’s happened,” said Scotty Dog.

“The second goal I set myself last Monday morning was to I’d like to play in one Pro Tour and I got home from Wigan to have an email from the PDC inviting me to the first Pro Tour.

“Last Monday I was setting goals for myself and this Monday I achieved them. That’s pretty special to be honest.”
