PIRATES legend Bjarne Pedersen will make his return to Wimborne Road as he becomes the first confirmed participant for team boss Neil Middleditch’s testimonial meeting.

The Dane is a three-time Elite League winner with Poole and is the second-highest points scorer in club history.

And Middleditch, who spent 10 seasons working with Pedersen, admitted it would be an “honour” to welcome him back.

He told the club website: “We spent a number of great seasons with Bjarne who is one of the ultimate professionals and it is absolutely fantastic.

“I consider it a personal honour that he contacted us about riding in the meeting.

“I am sure that I am not alone in saying that I am really looking forward to seeing the club's second highest points scorer of all time back racing at Wimborne Road."

Pirates are looking to honour Middleditch’s work since being appointed team boss by owner Matt Ford in 1999. He has guided the club to eight top-flight titles.

The meeting is set to take place on Wednesday, March 25, subject to British Speedway Promoters’ Association approval.

Pedersen, 41, in November announced the 2020 campaign would be his last in the sport.

Speaking then, owner Ford said: "In my 21 years of running this wonderful club, unquestionably Bjarne would be the rider I would consider to have been the most loyal servant.

"Whatever happens, I personally have to see Bjarne ride Wimborne Road again before he retires."
