BOSS Matt Ford said new recruit Steve Worrall was excited to take on the “pressure” of representing Pirates in the Championship.

The St Helens-born star this week became Poole’s first recruit for 2020, just five days since their switch to the second tier of British speedway was confirmed.

Worrall is rapidly approaching the 2,500 points barrier at Championship level and comes in on a 7.39 average.

However, owner Ford insisted the Manchester-based charger had not been pencilled in as Poole’s number one to start the campaign.

He told the club website: "I have always had a lot of admiration for Stevie.

“He's a good rider and has gained lots of experience as a number one at Championship level.

“We are expecting him to start at number three for the Pirates.

“I firmly believe that he is excited with the prospect of taking on the pressure that is associated with representing the Pirates."

Next season will mark the first time since 1990 Poole have competed in the second tier.
