CHERRIES are considering a January bid for Peterborough United striker Ivan Toney, according to a report in The Sun.

It is claimed both Cherries and Burnley are "prepared to pay £9million" for the forward who has notched 12 goals in League One this season.

Posh sit third in the table under boss Darren Ferguson.

The report states that Peterborough are looking for £13million for the 23-year-old, who played two Premier League matches for Newcastle United in the 2015-16 season, featuring in home games against Manchester United and Chelsea.

He joined Peterborough from the Magpies in 2018 after loan spells at Barnsley, Wigan, Shrewsbury and Scunthorpe.

Championship sides Cardiff, Middlesbrough, Bristol City and Derby are also said to be interested in Toney.

Peterborough chairman Darragh MacAnthony said: “Toney will break the transfer record for a League One player when he goes.

“If he goes that is. He’ll certainly smash the Posh record.

“We don’t want to lose anyone in January, but you can’t guarantee anything in football. If we do lose anyone they will be replaced."

As confirmed by the Premier League today, the January transfer window will open on Wednesday, January 1 and close at 11pm on Friday, January 31.
