WIMBORNE Athletic Club pressed home their advantage in the final South West League match of the season at Exeter to win the league and secure five of the nine trophies on offer, writes Peter Impett.

Leading after three matches but with Taunton AC in hot pursuit, Wimborne team managers led by Paula Hine secured a final convincing win reviving memories of their championship win in 2017.

Poole AC were sixth and Dorchester 10th out of 12 clubs.

Wimborne's Ryan Webb produced the day's star performance with a season’s best 2m15 senior men’s high jump and Joe Miles on 1m90 secured maximum points for the club. Max Chater (1m43) and Ed Salisbury (1m40) repeated the double in the under-13s and Jake Roberts added more top points with 1m60 in the under-15s.

Kane Aubrey threw 44m32 to win the under-17 discus following his silver medal in the UK under-17 national championships only the day before. Harry Wood’s 4m83 was a top level winning performance for Wimborne in the under-13 boys long jump as was Poole’s Billy Godden and his 9m96 in the shot. Megan Mowbray from Poole AC won the under-13 girls high jump with 1m35 and the long jump with 4m21. Dorchester’s Charlie Brooks won the under-15 triple jump with 11m36 while Courtney Cox achieved a standard for her second placed 9m29 in the under-15 shot.

On the track Caleb Cheng from Poole AC won both the 100m in 12.69 and the 200m in 26.89 in the under-13 boys with Elizabeth Richley repeating the feat in the girl’s event with a 100m time of 13.55 and a 200m time of 29.3. Adam Booth of Poole won the under-20 400m hurdles in 55.56 and Curtis Ormerod Taylor of Wimborne won the 200m in 22.46 in the same age group.

Steffi Bennett of Poole with a second placed 12.47 in the 100m and Alexandra Bryant’s winning 25.50 in the 200m provided the basis for a winning time of 52.73 in the women’s relay. Ed Bird’s winning 2.08.12 in the under-15 boys 800m was the standout performance for Dorchester on the track.

Wimborne’s under-13 boys relay team won by a country mile in 54.94 while the senior men had to work a little harder for their 45.78 win.
