GOALKEEPER James Mayo was the penalty shoot-out hero as Poppies edged past Downton in the second round of the Wessex League Cup.

Karol Rog put Poppies ahead against Downton, but the visitors quickly equalised through Dan Savage.

The score remained at 1-1, which brought penalties at Victoria Park where Mayo saved one and scored one with Lewis Harvey, Levi Ridealgh, Claudio Carvalho and Tyrone Carkeet also netting in the 5-4 shoot-out win for the hosts.

Christchurch have also progressed, easing past Fareham Town 3-1.

Goals from Kyle Graham, Callum Butler and Harvey Wright put Ollie Cherrett's side in control before a late consolation from the home side.

In the same competition, Ringwood Town were well beaten at Hythe & Dibden, losing 7-3 despite goals from Ryan Hamm, Ryan Osman and Callum Williams while Ollie Davies's goal was not enough for Verwood Town, going down 2-1 at Petersfield Town.

Bashley pushed holders Baffin Milton Rovers all the way in the New Forest. Lewis Ross's goal for the hosts cancelled out an early Tyler Moret strike to earn a 1-1 draw which sent the game to a penalty shoot-out. There Baffin triumphed 4-3 to move into round three.
