CHERRIES duo Dominic Solanke and Lloyd Kelly both watched on from the bench as England under-21s were dumped out of the European Championship in Cesena.

Following a goalless 75 minutes between Aidy Boothroyd's charges and Romania, the Young Lions conceded four times in the closing stages to cancel out strikes from Demarai Gray and Tammy Abraham.

The 4-2 defeat, following on from the late 2-1 loss against France in the opening game, means England are out of the competition with a game still to play.

Boothroyd: We are waiting for Solanke to 'catch fire'

Solanke, who started against the French, was left on the bench against Romania with Everton's Dominic Calvert-Lewin given the nod up front.

George Puscas finally broke the deadlock with a 76th minute penalty which saw Boothroyd turn to his bench, but he opted for Abraham instead of Solanke to boost the attack.

Gray quickly equalised, only for Ianis Hagi to put Romania back in front.

Abraham made it 2-2 with just three minutes left to play. However, a howler from goalkeeper Dean Henderson allowed Florinel Coman's effort to squirm in as the game swung back the way of the Romanians.

Abraham had two big chances to net again, striking the crossbar with one effort, before the game was put to bed when substitute Coman let fly from distance and found the top corner in stoppage time.

England sit third in Group C and round off their campaign against Croatia, who have also lost both their matches, in San Marino on Monday (8pm).
