MATTY Holmes described as “very disappointing” Gosport’s late penalty which prevented Wimborne Town from securing their Southern League South status for next season.

Magpies looked set to claim the point they needed to avoid the drop at rivals Gosport before referee Michael Chard pointed to the spot in the 84th minute for a foul on Ibra Sekajja and Charlie Davis slotted past Gerard Benfield.

Defeat left Wimborne 15th and three points clear of Walton Casuals, who occupy the final relegation place with one game to play.

Holmes told the Daily Echo: “It is very disappointing to concede that late in the game. We thought it was a little bit soft but the referee made a decision and we have to deal with it.

“It was a big decision but these things happen every season.

“We had a couple of decent chances but we didn’t hit the target. It wasn’t a great game in terms of a football spectacle.

“It had 0-0 written all over it.

"With five minutes to go we were mathematically safe but unfortunately they got the penalty. Now we have to finish it off on Saturday.”
