POOLE Comets stormed to convincing 154-93 victory against rivals Newport at the Harbourside raceway, reports Gordon Day.

Ben Mould led Comets' scoring with a 16-point haul but 10 riders all notched double-figure scores in bitterly cold wins.

Poole team manager Colin Sutton welcomed Ben Donahue and Kyran Yeatman back into the squad and Nathan Goulden was declared fit after a wrist injury for the British South West League clash.

Newport showed their hand when Mark Carmichael held off Poole skipper Will Bristowe to win the opening heat but the home side hit back straight away to open up a six-point advantage after three races.

Comets juniors Jasmine Oddie and Kenzie Bennett showed their class with two heat wins before Bristowe swept home to take the chequered flag in heat six to secure a 37-23 lead.

Carmichael hit back for the visitors in the next race but still trailed 61-39 at the halfway mark.

Kyran Yeatman and Bristowe opened the second half with another maximum heat win for the home side and from there Comets took complete control to run away for victory.

Sutton said: “ You can say I am over the moon.

"It’s always nice to start the season with a win. Everyone gave it their best shot and it was a brilliant team performance. However, it’s a long season and much too early to start thinking of championship wins.”
