BOSS Matty Holmes called for relegation-threatened Wimborne Town to keep destiny in their own hands and insisted: “You cannot rely on these other teams losing."

Magpies saw their cushion above the bottom three in Southern League South cut to just two points following Saturday’s 2-0 defeat at Beaconsfield Town.

A Louis Stead double compounded the visitors’ misery at Holloways Park.

With Gosport - who currently sit third from bottom - stunning high-flying Salisbury 2-0 away from home, Magpies are set for a nail-biting four-game finale to their league campaign.

Asked what his reaction was to seeing the points deficit being reduced, manager Holmes told the Daily Echo: “It was going to happen at some stage. You could not expect a team like Gosport with their budget to keep losing and losing.

“I have been reinforcing that to the lads, even over the past three or four weeks when we were eight points clear. You cannot rely on these other teams losing.

“There are going to be a lot more twists and turns as it goes, even with a short amount of games to go. We have to put our own house in order. We have switched off at key times.”
