MATTY Holmes admitted relegation from Southern League South would be “soul destroying” for Wimborne Town – but insisted one positive result could transform the outlook at the Cuthbury club.

A difficult run of one point from six matches saw Magpies fall to 17th in the table and five points clear of the relegation zone with just five games to play.

Holmes’s men on Saturday travel to Beaconsfield Town (3pm) in search of their first away victory since mid-February.

The Wimborne boss acknowledged relegation would be a bitter pill to swallow after his side’s successful efforts to stay out of the bottom three throughout the winter months.

Holmes told the Daily Echo: “Everyone has worked so hard to get five points away from third bottom. It would be soul-destroying if we do get caught but it is a tough and ruthless league.

“We will be trying as hard as we can to do it but we have no divine right to stay in the division at all like all of the other teams.

“We have to try to stay focused and work hard right up until the end of the season.”

Asked how much impact one win could have for his troops, Holmes said: “One positive result could make such a difference. When we went on a good run the first result started it all and gave everyone a lift.

“We have to look at the characters in the group, the ones who are a bit more experienced although they have not played many games at this level, and try to set the team up to get the win and crawl over the line rather than walk.

“It is a case of digging deep and getting what we can.”

Beaconsfield are one of only five teams to take all three points home from KoolPak Stadium this season after their 1-0 victory in September.

And wins against Frome Town, Dorchester Town and Gosport Borough in their past three matches lifted the Rams away from the danger zone and up to 11th.

“Beaconsfield had a couple of games in hand and they have started to get more points on the board,” said Holmes.

“They came to our place and got the win.

“They are going to be very dangerous but we need to set up and try to combat their threats – it is part of the league.

“It will be difficult but it is in our hands still.

“I keep saying if we win our games it does not matter if the teams in the bottom three are winning as well.

“Recently, we have not been getting the results and they have picked up points. We had a run where we stayed in games, we looked strong and very organised. We need to go back to that and make sure we regroup.”
