BOSS Matty Holmes insisted it would be “unbelievable” if Wimborne Town could retain the Dorset Senior Cup after they booked their place in this season’s final.

Magpies recorded a 3-2 victory over Western Premier Bridport in their last-four clash at Koolpak Stadium.

Luke Burbidge and Luke Holmes scored for the hosts either side of an Ed Butcher strike in the first half.

Wimborne’s Curtis Young extended Magpies’ lead before Ben Morris volleyed in what proved to be a consolation for the visitors 19 minutes from time.

Victory set up a final showdown with arch rivals Poole Town at Dorchester’s Avenue Stadium on Tuesday, April 9, after Dolphins beat Weymouth 2-0 at Bob Lucas Stadium.

Assessing his team’s performance, manager Holmes told the Daily Echo: “I was really pleased. We had quite a few changes and rested a couple of lads but Bridport were a very good side.

“I was very impressed with the way they went about the game. They had high energy, pressed and it was a difficult game.

“But we always had our noses in front to get a positive result. It was a great achievement from the lads.

“After so many years of not winning the cup it would be unbelievable if we could retain it this season.

“We have the game against Poole now which will be tough but anything can happen in a final – the lads should be proud they have made another one.”

Winger Burbidge sprung into life on 26 minutes against the Bees when winning a corner.

He quickly exchanged passes with Billy Maybury before firing a deflected shot past Jason Hutchings at the visiting keeper’s near post.

Soon after volleying wide from 18 yards, Butcher hauled Bridport level with arguably the goal of the game.

Braeden Symes’ majestic ball over the top set the winger free and the former Street man cut inside Lee Francis before blasting into the roof of the net past Chad Collins.

Wimborne were pegged back for just five minutes as youngster Aidan Shepherd superbly chased down a lost cause, sliding at the byline to chip a perfect cross past Hutchings for Luke Holmes to nod home three yards out.

On 54 minutes, Wimborne went 3-1 up. Young shot at Hutchings when one-on-one and saw the ball bobble into the net.

Plucky Bridport were undeterred and saw Morris volley home to set up a grandstand finish at 3-2.

But Wimborne kept their cool to ensure their quest to defend the cup remained on track.
