MATTY Holmes heralded Wimborne Town’s mental strength to battle for a point in difficult conditions against Southern League South leaders Weymouth.

The stalemate at KoolPak Stadium left Magpies 13th and five points above the relegation zone.

The Dorset derby, which took place in intense swirling winds, ended at three matches Wimborne’s losing run.

Reflecting on holding the Terras to a draw, Holmes told the Daily Echo: “I am absolutely delighted for my lads. What pleased me was with the conditions our mental attitude had to kick in and everyone was at it and very focused.

“We fought, we scrapped, Gerard (Benfield) was taking goal kicks and it was going out of play, it was swirling back and we defended manfully.”

Weymouth stopper Tom McHale denied Wimborne victory in the second half with several great saves after Holmes’s men coped admirably playing into the wind in the opening period.

“It was a huge point. Some of the teams at the bottom won again and the pressure is mounting,” said Holmes.

“The attitude was fantastic and I did not expect anything less.

“It is not just because it is the league leaders, we need a couple more results to see us over the line.”
