MELISSA Courtney starred as three Dorset athletes claimed medals at the British Indoor Athletics Championship, reports Nigel Harding.

Poole AC’s Courtney followed up her recent 3,000m victory in Karlsruhe, Germany, in a Welsh indoor record 8:43.36, with 8:50.61 in Birmingham as she finished second to Laura Muir’s 8:48.03.

The Scot will have home advantage when they meet again in Glasgow in three weeks’ time at the European Indoor Championships.

Bournemouth AC’s James Lelliott also secured silver in Birmingham, long-jumping 7.68m, while club-mate Bradley Pickup placed fourth with 7.50m.

Lelliott was also a recent 7.57m winner in Reykjavik, Iceland, but he lacks the European Indoor qualifying mark.

Piers Copeland achieved 1,500m bronze in Birmingham with 3:45.85.

Although the Wimborne AC youngster had achieved the Glasgow qualification standard with a 3:44.46 win in Cardiff last month, only the first two Birmingham finishers were automatically selected.

BAC’s Ronnie Wells clocked 6.87s in the 60m heats but did not appear for the semi-final.
