BOSS Matty Holmes defended goalkeeper Gerard Benfield following his side’s home draw with Hendon and insisted: “He will bounce back.”

The stopper made errors leading to two of the goals conceded by Magpies, in a game which finished 3-3.

Benfield was beaten at his near post by Ryan Hope before Luke Burbidge levelled.

Shaquille Hippolyte-Patrick converted from the penalty spot for the visitors but a second-half double from Toby Holmes put Wimborne 3-2 up.

The spoils were shared, however, after Benfield failed to claim a 66th-minute cross. Darren Locke tapped in to rescue a point for his side.

A post on the Magpies stopper’s Twitter account said: “Definitely my worst performance in a Wimborne shirt. Hold my hands up and say I wasn’t good enough.”

Boss Holmes told the Daily Echo: “On Saturday, Gerard didn’t quite get his basics right but he will bounce back. He’s got good character and will be fine.

“It’s great that he’s man enough to stand up and say he was disappointed in his performance.

“But we know in games gone by he has saved us and that’s what you want from a keeper if you are going to do well.”
