MATTY Holmes described as a “wonderful performance” Wimborne Town’s 3-0 win against Southern League South high-fliers Met Police.

A second-half double from Toby Holmes either side of a well-taken goal from Luke Burbidge secured victory at KoolPak Stadium.

In-form Magpies extended to 10 matches their unbeaten home run and stretched to eight points the gap to the relegation zone.

The win followed Saturday’s 1-1 draw against league leaders Taunton.

And Matty Holmes said four points from back-to-back fixtures against first and second-placed teams had been a brilliant return.

Boss Holmes told the Daily Echo: “It was a wonderful performance, especially after the weekend against Taunton which took a lot of the team’s legs. It was an outstanding effort.

“Everyone is buzzing with the run we have been on. We have been competitive and organised in our matches.

“The defeat at Frome was disappointing but the lads are playing above and beyond any expectations – you can’t ask for any more than that.”

Wimborne this season have taken 29 of their 37 points from matches at Cuthbury and boast the fourth-best home record in the division.

“I am delighted with the home form and everyone should enjoy it,” said Matty Holmes. “The crowds have been tremendous and strong compared to past seasons.

“We wore Taunton out in the end and played some good football at times. It was the same on Tuesday night.

“We made sure if they are going to beat us at home then they are going to have to go back to London absolutely blowing as if they have been in a 12-round boxing fight.

“This is the mentality we have and we will not give anyone cheap points. Teams are going to have to fight for it and earn the right to travel home with anything.”

After a goalless first half, Wimborne swept into the lead within a minute of the restart when Toby Holmes raced clear of the Met Police defence and calmly slotted the ball beyond the goalkeeper.

Just seven minutes later, Burbidge doubled the lead with a side-foot strike across the goal and into the far corner of the net.

Toby Holmes added his second in the 89th minute with a smart finish. The defensive shut-out was Magpies’ fourth clean sheet of the campaign.

Asked where the performance ranked for his side this season, manager Holmes said: “We were just as good against Taunton and at Weymouth.

“The result and scoreline against an in-form team who are second in the league and have not scored in three games all season shows the performance has to be right up there with our best.

“We have been working hard on keeping the goals out. It is not just the back four and the goalkeeper, it is down to the whole team.

“We have tightened up in midfield and prevented teams from having dangerous counter-attacks.”
