BOSS Matty Holmes hailed the qualities Matty Oldring added to Wimborne – and hoped the defender would return from injury this weekend.

The experienced centre-back failed a fitness test before last Saturday's defeat at Frome and missed the New Year's Day win against Gosport due to a groin problem.

Magpies on Saturday face sixth-place Merthyr at KoolPak Stadium in Southern League South (3pm).

Boss Holmes told the Daily Echo: "Matty missed the past couple of games and when he is on form he is a big player for us.

"We miss his leadership and ability to nick a goal from set-pieces.

"His injury had improved but his movement in the warm-up at Frome was just not right. "We are hopeful of having him available on Saturday."

The 1-0 reverse last time out ended at four Wimborne's unbeaten run.

Holmes challenged Magpies to get back on the victory trail against Merthyr.

"Away at their place was very tough on the astroturf," said Holmes

"They have to come to us where it will be a different game.

"Our home form speaks for itself and is keeping us out of the bottom three."
