WATFORD striker Troy Deeney has been charged following comments he made about referee David Coote after his team's 3-3 draw with Cherries eight days ago.

Deeney was critical of Coote's performance in the Premier League clash and claimed in a BBC post-match interview the official had "bottled it on a few occasions".

A statement from the Football Association on their FA Spokesperson Twitter account read: "Troy Deeney has been charged following post-match media comments he made about the appointed match referee for Watford's game against Bournemouth on January 2, 2019."

The FA added that Deeney had until 6pm on January 15 to respond to the charge.

Deeney said in the interview: "Abdoulaye Doucoure probably did get lucky (not to be sent off), but you can't tell me that their boy (Dan Gosling) did not try to do Tom Cleverley.

"They know it. We know. But the referee bottled it on a few occasions."

Deeney was interviewed alongside Cherries winger Ryan Fraser, who raised his eyebrows when the striker made the comments about Coote.

Winger Fraser’s shock has drawn plenty of amusement online and the video issued by @BBCMOTD has been liked more than 6,000 times.
