MATTY Holmes admitted Wimborne Town had got what they deserved after conceding four times in 50 minutes at Salisbury.

Magpies rallied superbly with three goals of their own but the damage had already been done.

Pablo Haysham opened the scoring midway through the first period before Matthew Partridge delivered the second.

Two goals in quick succession after the break from Luke Hopper and Tom Whelan extended to four Salisbury’s advantage.

Magpies almost pulled off an improbable comeback with efforts from Luke Burbidge, Toby Holmes and James Stokoe. But a fourth goal proved a bridge too far.

Boss Holmes told the Daily Echo: “We did not turn up for 50 minutes and we got what we deserved.

“We had a game plan and the lads did not stick to it, which was really disappointing. We went through certain scenarios in training and it was not carried through.

“We tried to regroup at half-time but then gave away two very quick goals.

“Salisbury are a very good side, one of the best we have played, and for us to deliver the last 25 minutes is pleasing but we have stop these silly goals and mistakes.

“I told the players after the game, ‘don’t go in the bar and think you had a good game because you didn’t, for 50 minutes you didn’t turn up’.

“The players did well to show the team spirit we have in the dressing room because we could have caved in and lost by seven or eight.”

Gerard Benfield denied Salisbury early on before Haysham played a neat one-two and placed past the Magpies keeper.

Toby Holmes had a chance to level but the marksman’s shot went over.

Salisbury doubled their lead through Partridge after he had been left unmarked at the far post.

Hopper turned his man to notch the third and two minutes later, Whelan was played through and he tucked away for a 4-0 lead.

Wimborne restored some pride when Burbidge collected a poor clearance and found the back of the net. Toby Holmes then prodded home a second seven minutes later.

In stoppage time, Stokoe rifled beyond Jake Hallett but there was not enough time left for Magpies to find an equaliser.

“Naive things in the game were so frustrating because we worked on them in training,” said boss Holmes.

“We have played Salisbury for the past few years so we know what threats they have. When you train to nullify those threats and it is not carried out, it is frustrating. We were not battered, I was just disappointed with how the lads played the game tactically.”
