WIMBORNE boss Matty Holmes signalled his intention to go all out in the Southern League Challenge Cup after seeing off arch rivals Poole Town.

Magpies recorded a convincing 3-0 victory against a heavily rotated Dolphins line-up at KoolPak Stadium to progress to the third round.

Luke Burbidge bagged a double against his former club to go with Curtis Young’s 25th minute opener.

Holmes had previously won the competition as a player during his time with Dorchester Town.

And despite their Southern League South campaign being the main priority, the Cuthbury boss saw no downside to a lengthy cup run.

He told the Daily Echo: “I know sometimes this cup can be a bit of a hindrance with a small squad and a possible fixture back log.

“But at the end of it you have won a trophy and I think the further you get in it, especially in beating Weymouth and Poole, you go for it now and try to work through the rounds.”

Wimborne broke the deadlock at Cuthbury when Young’s drilled effort flew through a sea of bodies past youngster Ben Rolleston in the Poole goal.

And after striker Steve Flynn missed a glorious chance for the hosts, Burbidge was on target to make it 2-0.

He slotted the ball home after neat work from Luke Holmes.

And it was Burbidge who added a third in second-half stoppage time after smashing in from close range.

Holmes added: “I was absolutely delighted. Going in 2-0 up at half-time I thought it could have been four or five.

“Our attitude to the game was first class.”

Magpies also announced the signing of defender Andrew Shah following the contest.

With his side facing an important FA Trophy third qualifying round battle at home to Isthmian Premier Dorking Wanderers on Saturday, Poole boss Tom Killick admitted he was always going to shuffle the pack.

As well as blooding a number of fringe players, the Dolphins boss gave a start to player-coach Micky Hubbard and sent on assistant-manager Taffy Richardson for the latter stages.

He added: “We didn’t really want to start with anyone we were going to start with on Saturday, so I made a lot of changes.

“There were a lot of younger players who got opportunities and squad players who needed game time and got it.

“I thought they all did reasonably well. I was pleased Wimborne put out a reasonably strong side because I think that made it more beneficial from our point of view.

“Taff is still fit as a fiddle. I knew he could come on and hold his own.

“I don’t know whether that is credit to him in his 50s or some sort of criticism of the other players out there! It was good to give him a little run-out.”
