CHERRIES star Adam Smith is still waiting to discover the full extent of the knee injury he suffered in Cherries' defeat at Newcastle.

The 27-year-old had to be stretchered off the pitch midway through the first half of the Premier League fixture at St James' Park on Saturday.

Smith, who left the stadium on crutches and with a supportive brace on his right knee, saw a specialist today.

But no further information on his condition will be available until the weekend or early next week.

After the game, Cherries boss Eddie Howe revealed fears Smith had sustained a "serious injury".

"He injured his knee in an earlier tackle," said Howe.

“He felt his knee was slightly unstable, went to take a quick free-kick and it gave way."

Smith missed the final two months of last season after suffering medial ligament damage against West Brom in March.

The former Tottenham full-back's shortened appearance against Newcastle was his 200th competitive outing in a Cherries shirt.

His team-mates failed to recover from Salomon Rondon's first-half brace, despite Jefferson Lerma pulling a goal back on the stroke of half-time.

Smith joined Cherries permanently in January 2014 having previously spent time on loan in Dorset during the 2010-11 season.
