CHERRIES winger Jordon Ibe felt he had not done enough to keep his place and said: “I need to work much harder.”

The former Liverpool man was drafted in for his first Premier League start of the campaign in Saturday’s 2-1 defeat at Newcastle United.

Ibe replaced Junior Stanislas after the ex-Burnley ace picked up a groin injury ahead of the contest.

The 22-year-old had chances to find the net in the north east, the most notable coming on 72 minutes when he blazed over the bar after Dan Gosling’s neat through ball.

Asked whether he felt he had done enough to keep his starting spot, Ibe told the Daily Echo: “No. I need to work much harder.

“When I get the chances on the pitch I need to take them. I didn’t take them on Saturday – that’s how it goes sometimes.

“I can always do better and that comes from the training pitch.

“I need to keep pushing hard but it was not really about getting a start. It was more important for us to get the three points but it didn’t happen on Saturday.

“It was good to play but we didn’t get the result we wanted. We have to fix that in the next game.

“I think we played better in the second half but there were a couple of sloppy 50-50s, corners and free-kicks – we got what we deserved.”

Londoner Ibe joined Cherries from Liverpool for a reported fee of £15million in July 2016.

He has since made 72 appearances in all competitions for Eddie Howe’s men, scoring four times and providing eight assists.

An England youth international who played in the Europa League, former Wycombe youngster Ibe has featured for 147 minutes across five top-flight appearances this season.

He scored in Carabao Cup clashes with MK Dons and Blackburn Rovers.

Reviewing the winger’s performance at St James’ Park, manager Howe said: “I think Jordon did okay. It was difficult for him because the team didn’t function as well as it could have done.

“That always hampers individuals within the team but I thought he responded well.

“He probably had our best chances in the game. There was one early in the match and then the one in the second half was probably our best moment of the half.”

If Ibe keeps his place in Howe’s starting XI, he will get the opportunity to add to his goal tally against an Arsenal side he scored against last season.

His first goal for Cherries proved the difference as the Dorset club came from 1-0 down to stun the Gunners 2-1 at Vitality Stadium.

He struck 16 minutes from time, adding to Callum Wilson’s leveller to record Cherries’ first victory over the north London outfit.
