BOSS Eddie Howe insisted Cherries should have been awarded a penalty during their 2-1 defeat at Newcastle.

Moments after conceding Salomon Rondon’s opener, attacking midfielder David Brooks went to ground in the box under the challenge of Federico Fernandez.

The Argentina international swung a right boot in a bid to clear Ryan Fraser’s cross, instead appearing to catch Brooks in front of referee Lee Probert.

But Probert waved play on with Cherries denied the opportunity to level from 12 yards.

Howe, who consulted fourth official Craig Pawson after the incident, told the Daily Echo: “I felt that was a penalty. Brooks just nicked the ball first and went over the boy’s leg. I felt it was a good call for a pen.

“It was fine margins and we will look at those incidents, of course.

“But I think we have to look at ourselves. We have set such high standards as a group, we expect to hit those levels again and again.”

Wales star Brooks had also been denied a spot-kick seven days previously when he felt he had been “barged” over by Luke Shaw during the 2-1 home loss to Manchester United.
