CALLUM Wilson admitted he had put his phone to one side following his England call-up because he wanted to focus on Cherries’ trip to Newcastle United.

The in-form striker was yesterday handed a spot in Gareth Southgate’s squad for Wembley fixtures against the United States and Croatia.

Wilson has since been bombarded with messages from family, friends and well-wishers on social media but he is holding off sending replies for now.

He told the club website: “It’s nice to get noticed for the hard work I’ve put in over the years and I’m hoping to go there, enjoy it and, hopefully, represent my country at some point.

“I’ve kept my feet on the ground, put my phone away in the cupboard and tried to keep everything as normal as possible.

“I’ve had a lot of friends and family wishing me well and sending their congratulations. There are so many to reply to but I need to focus on Bournemouth and the game against Newcastle.

“After that, maybe on Sunday, I’ll sit down and reply to a few.”

Some 25 of Wilson’s 50 Cherries goals have come in the Premier League. He is the club’s second-highest scorer at England’s elite level – nine behind Joshua King.
