BOSS Matty Holmes admitted Wimborne Town had been punished for mistakes and indiscipline after Toby Holmes was shown red at Basingstoke.

The Magpies frontman had struck twice during the first half at the Camrose but was given his marching orders by referee Barrie Small late on for alleged foul and abusive language.

Magpies went on to lose 4-2 and exit the FA Trophy at the first qualifying round stage.

Manager Holmes told the Daily Echo: “At 4-2 when Toby got sent off, we had no way back in.

“The referee said he swore at him. Toby did a great bit of skill, he cut inside and we felt he was fouled on the edge of the box.

“Just prior to that he had run 40 yards back to tackle their midfield player. It was a sliding tackle from the side, he got the ball but the referee gave him a yellow card.

“We felt that was harsh and when he was fouled on the edge of the box, the referee waved it on and I think Toby swore at him.

“It’s just frustration but Toby knows you can’t swear. It’s not right to swear at people anyway. He apologised to all the lads and we now lose Toby for two games.

“I said to them after as well as being punished for goals and mistakes, we are now being punished for indiscipline. That has to be tidied up

“These days, if you swear at referees, you are in trouble. But if they were consistent I think he would have sent a couple more off in the game. He would be sending players off probably every week.”

Striker Holmes had fired the visitors ahead before Basingstoke levelled through Sam Argent eight minutes later.

A rapid response from Wimborne saw hotshot Holmes net his second but Ben Wright’s powerful low drive made it 2-2.

Argent netted once more to put Basingstoke in front before Jack McKnight wrapped up the tie 20 minutes from time.

Defeat meant threadbare Magpies, who named assistant Danny Holmes and coach Shane Traynor on the bench, missed out on £3,250 in prize money.

“I was disappointed defensively. The goals we gave away were really poor,” said the Wimborne manager.

“I have no problems with our football. We are creating chances for fun with lovely link-up play but we are destroying ourselves with individual mistakes, which is happening too much.

“We are giving teams simple goals. The goals we score we have to work hard for. To score two goals away from home again, you’d like to think you’d win a game of football. We cannot keep scoring two goals and getting beaten.”

Wimborne face Hartley Wintney in Southern League South at KoolPak Stadium on Saturday (3pm).
