BOSS Matty Holmes is hopeful Wimborne Town’s Southern League Cup triumph over Weymouth can be the turning point in their campaign.

With just one victory and four points from seven Southern League South contests, Magpies turned on the style to beat a much-changed Terras outfit 2-0 at KoolPak Stadium.

Louis Kellaway’s early effort and Rhys Owen’s brilliant strike proved the difference between the two sides.

Victory saw Wimborne progress to the second round for the first time since 2013.

Holmes told Radio Wimborne: “Hopefully this performance springboards the boys because it had been coming.

“It was lovely to get a clean sheet and a couple of goals against a really good side. Hopefully that will push us on for the season.

“I was really pleased, it was a great performance by the lads. We had to give Weymouth a lot of respect because they are an excellent football team.

“We had to drop deeper and let them play at the back but the boys did ever so well, they all knew their roles, responsibilities and executed the game plan really well.”

The two Dorset clubs are set to face off again in league action at the Bob Lucas Stadium on Saturday (3pm).

Magpies: Collins, Lee, Penny, Francis, Davidson, Arnold, Stokoe (L Holmes, h-t), Kellaway, T Holmes (Shepherd, 70), Young, Owen. Unused subs: Benfield, Tilstead.
