POOLE Town boss Tom Killick hoped goalkeeper Ben Rolleston savoured the moment after his “brilliant” heroics at Dorchester.

The young stopper, who has been part of Dolphins’ Wyvern League setup this season, pulled off a string of fine saves at the Avenue during his side’s 1-1 Southern League Cup first round contest.

And with the tie decided by a penalty shootout, Rolleston saved spot-kicks from Harry Kite and Callum Thompson to ensure Dolphins triumphed 4-2 and progressed to round two.

Killick told the Daily Echo: “To win in those circumstances, I think the players deserve great credit, particularly the young goalkeeper.

“In some ways the shootout was just the icing on the cake for him.

“It’s one thing sticking young outfield players in for what is quite a big game, but to do it with a goalkeeper, I’d imagine it was quite nerve-wracking for him.

“To cope with that in the way he did, I thought was brilliant and I hope he does remember it for a while. It was well-deserved.

“In the first half Dorchester were better than us, which you take on the chin a little bit in terms of the line-up they had.

“But Ben produced some brilliant saves and then in the second half, although he wasn’t as busy, he pulled off more good saves.

“To then do what he did in the shootout, hopefully it will be a night he will remember for a little while. I was very pleased with him and for him.”

Tom Blair had given Dorchester a first-half lead before Yeovil Town loanee Korrey Henry levelled to take the game to penalties.

And having seen a number of the club’s youngsters step up to the plate against a Magpies side who only made three changes to their starting XI, Killick was happy with the visitors’ work.

“It ticked all the boxes in terms of getting some of the first-team players, who hadn’t been getting huge game time, on the pitch,” he added.

“Steve Devlin had been out through injury, Franklyn Clarke had sat out the past couple of games and Sam Griffin was a substitute on Saturday.

“Korrey Henry can’t play in the FA Cup on Saturday, so it made sense to play him. Ollie Balmer has been short of game time, as has Adam Grange.

“We then filled the side with young players and, by the time we had made our substitutions, we had six or seven under-18s out there.

“It’s hard to assess where they are sometimes when you are watching them against opposition which is probably a long way off what they would face if they were put into the first team.

“But I knew this would be a good test for the young players and that’s why it was a valuable game.”
