MATTY Holmes described as “wonderful” the array of talent in Weymouth’s squad – having worked with a number of their line-up in Cherries’ youth ranks.

The Wimborne boss is tomorrow preparing to host the high-flying Terras in first round of the Southern League Challenge Cup (7.45pm).

Managed by Cherries under-21 assistant Mark Molesley, the Weymouth squad includes the likes of ex-Cherries Brandon Goodship, Charlie Davis, Josh Wakefield, Antonio Diaz, Jake McCarthy and Josh Carmichael among others.

Holmes spent 10 years in Cherries’ academy setup, while brother Danny, his assistant, worked for eight years in the system.

Boss Holmes told the Daily Echo: “They are a wonderful side with players who myself and Danny have worked with over the years.

“We know the boys very well and of course we know Mark very well.

“They are wonderful lads and Mark has developed a very good technical side, which is starting to develop. They are going to be a force this season.

“There is a good connection and we have really good ties with Weymouth. I think it will be a good footballing game, that’s for sure.”

Wimborne face Weymouth in cup action before heading to Bob Lucas Stadium in the league on Saturday.

With remaining in Southern League South his main priority, the Cuthbury boss insisted he may use the cup clash to rotate his squad.

“We have to be mindful. Saturday is a huge game and a tough task down there a few days after playing them on the Tuesday,” he added.
