RYAN Morrell scored Wimborne’s only try as they were outclassed 43-5 by South West One East leaders Newbury Blues.

The scale of Wimborne’s task was evident when injury and illness deprived them of forwards Dec Foley, Steve King, Ben Davies and Tyler Adams.

New props were drafted in with Shaun Murphy playing in his first game of the season, while Morgan Bowen made his first-team debut. There were also first starts of the campaign for Tom Lofts and Matt Christopher.

Unsurprisingly, Newbury put Wimborne under early pressure up front, which led to a score when a penalty try was awarded after the visiting scrum had been driven back over the try-line.

The Minstermen struggled to get out of their half in the opening 40 minutes and Newbury crossed on four further occasions to lead 31-0.

Matters worsened after the restart when Newbury added a couple more tries.

However, Wimborne showed a good deal of grit in the rest of the game, despite losing Darren Deguera, Ollie Hamer and Tom Lofts to injury.

Their consolation was provided by Morrell, who squeezed over in the corner.

Minstermen: Munster, Morrell, Hamer, Mason, Kerley, Roberts, Bourton, Murphy, Holman, Bowen, Christopher, Lofts, Degeura, Kimber, Best. Replacements: Case, Atkins, Young.

NEW Milton suffered their second defeat in a row when visitors Basingstoke eased to a 29-6 win in Hampshire Premier.

Milton edged in front when Adam Lavis slotted a penalty but Basingstoke hit back with a try in the corner.

A pushover score saw the lead extended before Lavis converted a second penalty to bring it back to 10-6 at half-time.

However, after the resumption Basingstoke were in uncompromising mood, scoring three further tries to run out comfortable winners.

Milton squad: Hynd, Frampton, Wright, Halligan, Swamers, Royley, Treacey, Davis, Lavis, Oliver, Conacher, N Smith, Rehel, Osborn, Z Smith, Bew, Lines, Santa Maria.
