ANDREW Surman revealed Cherries had “worked all week” on facing dangerous deliveries and admitted it had been disappointing not to deal with Burnley's crosses.

The Dorset club were undone in a 4-0 defeat at Turf Moor with the midfielder insisting his side had to go “back to the drawing board”.

Sean Dyche’s charges have put in 135 crosses in six Premier League contests this season – more than any other side in the division.

For Saturday’s opener, Jack Cork delivered for Sam Vokes, whose knockdown was eventually turned in on the rebound by Matej Vydra.

Johann Berg Gudmundsson’s back-post delivery was slotted home by Aaron Lennon to double the advantage before the break.

Lennon then crossed for Gudmundsson to strike the upright before Ashley Barnes tapped in to make it 3-0 on 83 minutes.

The former England winger also centred for Barnes on the counter two minutes from time to compound a miserable afternoon for Eddie Howe’s men.

Surman told the Daily Echo: “We got in some really good areas, created some decent chances and, unfortunately, we came unstuck regarding probably their biggest threat, which is crosses into the box.

“It was disappointing because we had worked on that all week. But it only takes one to switch off at one or two crosses and they will score.

“That is what they are good at. They put balls in the box, put you under pressure and you have to stand up to that.”

Surman had been recalled to Cherries’ starting XI in place of Dan Gosling, who had been ruled out with a calf strain.

And the former Wolves and Norwich star, who skippered the side on his return, pinpointed Burnley’s second strike as the defining moment.

He added: “The second goal knocked the stuffing out of us a bit in the first half.

“When you go 2-0 down it’s a big task in the Premier League to try to come back.

“For it to come so quickly after the first was disappointing because you want to keep a foothold in the game.

“In the second half we came out and created good chances. We didn’t take them and the longer we chased the game we left ourselves a bit open and they scored the third and fourth.

“I know it’s difficult because we lost 4-0 but we did create chances. We create chances in every game we play.

“Unfortunately, we weren’t clinical enough and the big moments went for them. They didn’t go for us and we have to go back to the drawing board and react now.

“We just need to keep working hard. We have a good group and a strong group. Everyone is disappointed but we have always reacted well to defeat and worked even harder in training. That is what we will be doing.”
