MELISSA Courtney’s spree along New York’s most famous shopping street was very different from that of most tourists, reports Nigel Harding.

The Poole AC ace finished third in the Fifth Avenue Mile in a time of 4:20.2, just two seconds down on Jenny Simpson, who won the prestigious event for the seventh time, with another American, Colleen Quigley, second.

As the best of the British, Courtney, who won the Westminster Mile in May, outpaced Laura Weightman, national number two for 1500m, as well as Sarah McDonald, Adelle Tracey and Steph Twell.

Also taking to the streets, long jumper James Lelliott leapt 7.39m on Gateshead Quay.

The Bournemouth AC star out-distanced 2012 Olympic champion Greg Rutherford in his final competition by just a single centimetre, but was himself two centimetres down on some time Poole AC junior Jack Roach in a closely-fought competition.

PAC wheelchair racer Chris Nash finished 10th in his section of the Great North Run, posting 59:50, just 23 seconds slower than the time with which Sir Mo Farah led the runners home.

Meanwhile, Danielle Broom and Dan Brunsden starred in Bournemouth AC’s traditional end-of-season meeting at King’s Park.

Broom was in fine form in both discus (43.03m) and hammer (54.06m). Brunsden excelled with shot (14.54m) and discus (42.03m), though his 45.84m hammer throw was trumped by brother Steve’s 46.54m.

Under-15 South of England long jump champion Lana Blake leapt 5.24m and achieved an impressive 10.80m triple jump debut. Amelia Verney dominated the under-15 girls’ track (100m 12.5s, 200m 25.6s, and 300m 42.5s). Arief McKenna won the under-13 boys’ 200m in 25.7s.

In the under-20 100m, Poole AC’s Tom Casson (11.0s) held off Wimborne’s Curtis Ormerod-Taylor by one-tenth. Charlotte Ayton leapt 5.50m to win the senior long jump for the Minster club, while Amy Darragh won the under-13 girls’ discus (22.09m).

Dorchester AC’s Olivia Willmore won the senior shot with 10.43m. New Forest Juniors’ Lily Smith doubled the under-13 sprints (12.7s and 26.8s), while club-mate Isobel Harris high jumped 1.47m.
