BOSS Tom Killick believes Poole Town could have unearthed a gem from their youth ranks in “outstanding” Josh Leslie-Smith.

The teenage full-back put in an accomplished display, playing 90 minutes as Dolphins breezed past arch rivals Wimborne Town 4-0 on Monday.

Leslie-Smith was part of a back four which kept quiet the likes of prolific marksman Toby Holmes and former Poole winger Luke Burbidge to record their first clean sheet of the season.

Having made four league starts this campaign, the youngster is expected to feature when Dolphins host struggling Staines Town on Saturday (3pm).

And Killick was keen to heap praise on Leslie-Smith, who made his National South debut at Bath City in April 2017.

He told the Daily Echo: “I felt as a back four we dominated Wimborne. There has to be a special mention for young Josh Leslie-Smith, he is just outstanding in everything he is doing at the moment.

“If he can carry on with those sorts of performances then we have a real player on our hands.

“He is only a teenager and was up against Luke Burbidge, who is a difficult customer, but there was only one winner in that duel.

“For someone of such a young age to put in a performance like that, he is looking very accomplished. It gives you a lot of pleasure when they come through.”

Visitors Staines have struggled since transferring from the Isthmian League Premier Division in the summer.

The Swans have lost four of their opening five league fixtures, their only victory coming against bottom-of-the-pile Chesham United.

After seeing his side in full flow during their bank holiday bonanza against the Magpies, Killick is eager to produce more of the same.

“What we cannot do is win games and produce performances in isolation,” he added.

“We had a big performance at Salisbury and a big performance at Basingstoke. We did well at Wimborne but we have had two insipid performances thrown into it as well.

“They are what we have to eradicate if we want to challenge at the right end. We have to find a consistency about our performances.”

Dolphins striker Marvin Brooks has been in red-hot scoring form with three goals in his past three games.

He was forced off with a hamstring problem during Monday’s derby after nodding in Jez Bedford’s precise cross.

“We are hoping the injury had been caught reasonably early,” added Killick.

“You always worry it may be a couple of weeks but Richard Gillespie came on and did what he does.

“I thought Marvin won pretty much every header against Wimborne. By the end of it their two centre-halves looked as if they wanted to be somewhere else.

“He is a powerhouse and an absolute athlete. It sets everything up when you have that.”
