PARALYMPIC prospect Leo McCrea struck gold and bronze to lead an eight-medal tally by Dorset swimmers at the Swim England Summer Meet in Sheffield.

The 14-year-old from Bournemouth Collegiate School (BCS) was also among four swimmers from four Dorset clubs who made the top step of the podium.

Just days after watching big sister Jazz McCrea scoop gold and silver for Poole in the British Championships, the S6 para-swimmer won the multi-class 50m butterfly in 39.68 and came third in the 100m breaststroke in 1:37.90.

McCrea, who is poised to follow in the footsteps of BCS’s Commonwealth and Paralympic gold medallist Alice Tai, was also fourth in the 400m freestyle and 200m individual medley (IM).

Seagulls’ Sonny Chamberlain-Hyde reached all three 15yrs backstroke finals, winning gold in the 200m in 2:11.63 and placing fifth and eighth, respectively, in the 100m and 50m.

Swim Bournemouth’s Amy Brown and Ella Chown both made the podium, Brown striking gold in the 14yrs 400m IM in 5:07.26, Chown claiming bronze in the 15yrs 100m freestyle as well as fifth in the 200m freestyle final and 16th in the 50m.

Poole’s Teagan-Mae Graham won the fourth gold for Dorset with a six-second victory margin in the 17/o 1500m freestyle (17:59.69).

BCS’s Christian Tai added a silver in the 17/o 50m butterfly (25.96) as well as coming 12th and 13th in the 200m fly and 50m breaststroke.

Sherborne Storm’s Alice Holloway completed the Dorset tally with bronze in the 16yrs 50m breaststroke in 34.12.

Poole’s Abbie Quarrie was unlucky to miss out on a medal, finishing fourth in the 16yrs 200m breaststroke in 2:46.10, a second slower than her heat time, which would have won bronze in the final.

Team-mate Robbie Hemmings also had a fourth place – in the 13-14yrs 100m backstroke.

Poole’s Izzy Hepburn made several finals, placing seventh in the 16yrs 100m breaststroke and 200m IM, eighth in the 400m IM and 13th in the 200m breaststroke.

Jazz McCrea was sixth in the 17/o 400m IM while Poole’s Ella McNamara was sixth in the 15yrs 50m freestyle and 11th in the 50m fly, missing the final by 0.01sec.

Seagulls’ James Richardson was seventh in the 16yrs 800m freestyle with team-mate Isaac Ellis ninth in the 13-14yrs 100m fly.

BCS’s Oni Taiwo was seventh in the 16yrs 100m freestyle with club-mate Ben Samuel ninth in the 17/o 50m fly and 16th in the 50m freestyle.

Swim Bournemouth’s Alex Palotai-Avella came 10th in the 14yrs 400m freestyle final while Poole’s Miles Ward was 12th in the 15yrs 800m freestyle.

• Poole’s Commonwealth Games medallist Jacob Peters became the first British 17-year-old to swim 50m butterfly in under 24 seconds at the European Championships in Glasgow.

His 17yrs British age group record of 23.95 placed him equal 22nd out of 64 swimmers.

Earlier, Peters posted a disappointing 2:00.40 for 24th place in a 200m butterfly in which a time within two or three seconds of his age group record would have comfortably put him in the semis.

He was due to swim the 100m butterfly and possibly the medley relay heats today and tomorrow.
