ALL-rounder Jigar Naik claimed five wickets on the first day of Dorset's Unicorns Championship clash against Shropshire at Chapel Gate.

However, despite the exploits of the former Leicestershire man, Shropshire posted a formidable 310 in their first innings, with Dorset 65 for two at the close.

Dorset made a promising start and had the visitors wobbling on 25 for two after Omar Ali had been bowled by Ed Bartlett and Will Parton caught behind by Chris Park off Josh McCoy.

But a stand of 117 for the third wicket between captain Steve Leach and Warrick Fynn saw Shropshire move on to 142 for two.

Naik removed both in quick succession, pouching Leach (63) off his own bowling and then having Fynn (66) caught by Luke Webb as the tide started to turn at 157 for four.

But although Naik trapped in front Alexei Kervezee (30) and Bartlett (2-42) had Joe Carrasco caught behind by Park, Shropshire progressed to 247 for six.

Naik (5-116) bowled Simon Gregory and had Ross Aucott (58) caught behind before a ninth-wicket stand of 41 between Sam Whitney and Gurjit Sandhu frustrated the hosts.

Mark Wolstenholme (2-31) castled both Sandhu (23) and Alex Wyatt but not before the score had moved on to 310.

Dorset lost openers Josh Digby and Ben Wells with Webb (19) and Alex Eckland (15) both undefeated at stumps.
