Meanwhile, Wimborne AC's Grace Copeland scooped a bronze medal at the English Schools' Track & Field Championships at the Alexander Stadium.

The Queen Elizabeth’s School pupil, making her fifth visit to the championships, recorded a time of 9.44.11 in the senior girls' 3000m and was the only Dorset athlete to medal.

And to mark her international selections, Copeland brought the English Schools' banner into the stadium for the march-past.

Seven Wimborne AC athletes made the trip to Birmingham for what is reputed to be the fourth largest event of its kind in the world in terms of the number of participants.

Former Queen Elizabeth's student Charlotte Ayton was fifth in the senior girls' long jump, just a centimetre down on her personal best at 5.59m.

Abbie Lovering, also of Queen Elizabeth’s, could count herself unfortunate that, having achieved national standard, she was the only one at the level to miss out on the final of the intermediate girls' 300m hurdles, timed at 44.73.

Abbie White, who attends Lytchett Minster School, recorded a personal best for her seventh place in the inter-girls' hammer (52.16m) and there were fine performances from Bethan Burley (Canford), Ben Butcher (Poole Grammar) and Daisy Baker.
