STRIKER Jermain Defoe is backing Lewis Cook to be selected for this summer’s World Cup.

The talented midfielder could become the first serving Cherries player to win a senior England cap when Gareth Southgate’s men tomorrow host Italy at Wembley Stadium (8pm).

Cook was an unused substitute on Friday as the Three Lions triumphed 1-0 against the Netherlands in Amsterdam.

But Defoe believes the 21-year-old has the ability to make an impact at senior level on the international stage.

The Cherries frontman, overlooked for the squad by national boss Southgate, told the club website: “If he can play some part and does well, he could be on the plane. In my opinion he is good enough to go.

“If it’s based on merit then he should be in the squad for how he has played. Ever since he has been in our team he has been unbelievable.

“He has so much potential. If you think of any player in the country around that age, he is definitely up there with the best.

“If he does what he does at the club, then he will be fine.

“I am so happy he has got a run of games and is playing in the best league in the world. He has got himself in the mix now with the (England) seniors, and I believe he can stay there.

“If he doesn’t go it’s not the end of the world because the fact he is in the mix is the most important thing going into next season.”

Liverpool defender Joe Gomez pulled out of the England group on Sunday through injury, following the withdrawals of Jack Wilshere and Ryan Bertrand.

Defoe’s chances of making the national squad were hindered when he fractured his ankle against Chelsea in the Carabao Cup quarter final before Christmas.

He is yet to start for Cherries since making his return, having made substitute appearances against Newcastle, Tottenham and West Brom.
