BOURNEMOUTH table tennis ace Hugo Pang claimed a top-10 finish against the best young players in England at the Junior Masters tournament.

The prestigious Masters competition is for the elite players in England, with competitors qualifying primarily by virtue of their national rankings.

The 12 players meet each other once in a round-robin format.

Pang, 15, was seeded 10th for the event staged at the Batt Club in Harlow last weekend.

A difficult start left him without a victory in six matches on day one, although he took both the number one and two seeds to five sets.

However on day two, Pang won twice to secure his 10th place berth.

The event, on Saturday and Sunday, was won by national junior champion Helshan Weerasinghe, who won 10 of his 11 matches.

Bournemouth School pupil Pang said: “I didn’t do too well on the first day, although I had a few chances to win and a few match points.

“This competition helps you to improve your game because you’re playing all these different players and different styles and you’ve got to adapt.”
