SKY Sports presenter Jeff Stelling awarded his goal of the day to Corfe Mullen’s 14-year-old James Lane – ahead of Yaya Toure’s stunner for Manchester City in the League Cup final.

Stelling, whose goalkeeper son Matthew was on the receiving end for Winchester Youth, used his famous catchphrase on Twitter to hail the strike as #unbelievableCorfe!

The frontman of Sky’s Soccer Saturday, who has more than 300,000 followers on the social network site, was among the crowd on Sunday to see Corfe Mullen reach the final of the Hampshire Under-14 Cup.

Stelling, who also presented Countdown between 2009 and 2011, told the Daily Echo: “The ball came to him on the edge of box, about 20 to 25 yards out, and he volleyed it straight into the top corner. My son is the goalkeeper for Winchester and he said it was the best goal he had ever had scored against him.”

James’s excellent effort, which capped a 3-0 win for Corfe Mullen, came on the same day as Toure netted with a brilliant finish from 25 yards as Manchester City came from behind to beat Sunderland at Wembley.

Stelling, who had given the Hampshire Cup tie a mention on Soccer Saturday, added: “It was a big day for all the boys and it was nice to be able to give them a plug. It is always nice to give them a bit of support.

"The Corfe Mullen team, management and supporters were absolutely delightful. It was a joy for one of my boys to be involved. There wasn’t too much between the sides but they scored three great goals. They are a very good side at that level.”

Corfe Mullen United are in the hunt to win their division of the Bournemouth Youth League and will be hoping to prevail in the final of the Hampshire Cup when they meet Meon Milton on March 16.

Secretary Mike Dobson told the Daily Echo: “I saw he had tweeted last week to congratulate Winchester on reaching the semi-final so I tweeted him to ask if there would be any chance of a mention for Sunday's game on Soccer Saturday.

“He replied saying it would have been unprofessional of him not to mention the big match of the weekend and he gave it a plug at the end of the show on Saturday!

“It was fantastic and the boys were made up so we thanked him when we saw him on Sunday. He was very complimentary and stayed behind to have his picture taken with the players. He was brilliant.”
