A star of the Disney+ series Rivals has joined the cast of the ITV drama First Woman, which is described as being the "ultimate emotional rollercoaster."

The broadcaster commissioned the programme last month, with Andrea Riseborough and Ashley Walters in the lead roles.

Now Alex Hassell, who is known for playing Rupert Campbell-Black in Rivals, has joined the cast, along with Jennifer Ehle.

Digital Spy reports that First Woman will see Riseborough portray an astronaut, Claire, who goes missing in suspicious circumstances.

Walters plays her husband, Ben, who goes in search of his wife and the truth regarding her disappearance.

Hassell has been cast as the UK’s Prime Minister, Christopher Scott, who is described as "polished, pragmatic and disciplined".

In a press release, ITV added: "He has built his centrist political identity on the belief that Britain must compete on a global stage, and as the crisis begins to deepen, he finds his position increasingly precarious.

"How far will Christopher go in pursuit of his own personal ambition?"

Meanwhile, Ehle stars as Helen Sadler, an investigator with the UK Space Flight Authority, tasked with uncovering what happened to Claire.

First Woman set to be the "ultimate emotional rollercoaster"

First Woman is written by Lydia Yeoman, George Oakes and Ben Schiffer and will be directed by Philip Martin.

When the programme was first announced, producers James Gandhi and Damien Timmer shared: “We’re excited to partner with Alcon on what is going to be one of the most ambitious ITV dramas ever made.

"First Woman will keep global audiences on the edge of their seats - it’s the ultimate emotional rollercoaster.”

Meanwhile, ITV’s Director of Drama, Polly Hill, said: “I wanted ITV to make this the moment I read it.
