It has been announced that Britain’s longest-reigning monarch, Queen Elizabeth II has died, aged 96. 

The news of her death was announced in a statement on behalf of the Royal Family. 

Her death brings an end to a 70-year reign, the longest in history, having ascended the throne following the death of her father, King George VI on 6 February 1952.  

She is survived by her four children: Charles, Prince of Wales; Anne, Princess Royal, Prince Andrew, Duke of York and Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex.

Who will succeed the Queen?

As the first born of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Prince Charles will become king. 

He is permitted to choose his own name and is expected to be known as King Charles III.  

A meeting of the Accession Council is due to take place at St James’ Palace for formalities to take place and Charles is expected to be named King tomorrow.  

His siblings Anne, Princess Royal, Prince Andrew, Duke of York and Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex will ceremoniously kiss his hand. 

While the Queen lies in state Charles will visit Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales before his first words as monarch.  

The coronation of King Charles will be planned in coming months and his previous title of Prince of Wales will be passed on to his first son Prince William. 

What is the Royal Family line of succession?

Prince William, the Duke of Cambridge, is next in line after Prince Charles as his eldest son.

His children in age order are then next after him, in George, Charlotte and then Louis.

Prince Harry, the Duke of Sussex, then comes after them, followed by his children Archie and Lilibet.
