Great British Bake Off (GBBO) returned to our screens on Tuesday for the first episode of series 12.

On the show amateur bakers take part in cake challenges where they attempt to pull off signature, technical and showstopper bakes each week.

How to watch Great British Bake Off 2021

The Great British Bake Off will return to our screens on Tuesday 28 September on channel 4 at 8pm and the show is 90 minutes in length.

The judges, Paul Hollywood and Dame Prue Leith, and presenters Matt Lucas and Noel Fielding have also returned to see the bakers’ creations in the well-known tent.

Each episode is a combination of a baking week and this week on the show was cake week.

Who was star baker for cake week?

At the end of the episode we saw Jürgen, a 56-year-old IT professional from Sussex who moved over from Germany 18 years ago, crowned star baker as he wowed the judges with his efforts.

Jürgen made a phone call to announce the news but the show ended with him still waiting for someone to pick up.

Fans of GBBO took to Twitter to share their sadness after nobody answered the phone call with one writing: “I’m already deeply in love with Jurgen. And I’m devastated that no one answered the flipping phone! #GBBO #BakeOff”

Another tweeted: “Aww poor Jurgen – wanting to brag about being week 1’s #StarBaker and no-one’s picking up the phone #GBBO #BakeOff”

Who left Great British Bake Off in the first episode?

Unfortunately, despite it being the first episode, one contestant has been eliminated from the competition.

Tom, a 28-year-old software developer from Kent, left the show and will not be taking part in further challenges.

The programme’s Twitter account tweeted a letter from Tom, writing: ““Although my time in the Bake Off tent may have been short, it certainly has been very sweet.” Here’s Tom’s lovely letter to all you #GBBO fans.”

Great British Bake Off will continue to air on channel 4 on Tuesdays at 8pm.
