MORE than a dozen charities in Christchurch joined forces to keep their town’s annual carnival alive.
The procession on July 14, 1979, was hailed as one of the best since the carnival was revived six years previously after a lapse of almost 15 years.
Many scout and brownie groups were in the forefront, and it was the Highcliffe Brownies, with a lavish Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs float, who won first prize.
Christchurch Scout Band led the colourful cavalcade of more than 20 floats and walking entries through the sunlit town centre and crowd thronged streets.
Christchurch Lions Club trailed a guillotine behind their 13-seater pedal cycle to mark Bastille Day and win second prize.
Highcliffe Cubs, whose magnificent Viking longship dazzled spectators, pillaged third place.
The procession marched to the beat of the bands of the 1st Christchurch Boys’ Brigade and the Girls' Brigade.
