Abseiling and meditation were just a couple of the activities on offer at a special day for Bournemouth youngsters.

The Dorset Police Activity Day on July 9, 1989, saw thirty local clubs offer demonstrations on Bournemouth Girls School’s playing fields in Strouden Park.

An abseiling tower was run by Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme runners, while Well Women Centre organisers were on hand to offer blood pressure checks.

On the spiritual side, the Dorset youth section of the Nichiren Soshu Buddhist Society set up an introductory stall explaining its philosophies.

Recruitment drives were held by sea cadets, army cadets and venture scouts.

More than 3,000 spectators turned up to enjoy the afternoon fun which also included karate and American football displays and a police dog demonstration.
